POST INFRASTRUCTURAL
ADAPTATION
SRIJON BARUA
Transportation Infrastructures impose a controlled and static colonization over the organic dynamism of urban contexts. When placed together, this hybridization of the infra-urban concept redefines transportation infrastructure beyond its strictly utilitarian definition by facilitating new land uses around its under-viaduct spaces. The management and adaptation of these urban spaces under flyovers can manifest as either assets or liabilities, depending on the unique conditions prevalent in the Global South. Employing participatory action research datasets and zoning models, this study maps out the spatial relationships with the physical infrastructure as a research methodology. This article illustrates how the squatter occupants of the Tejgaon-Nabisco Flyover autonomously govern the spaces under the flyover, engaging in innovative production of places and endemic economic practices that are supported by the flyover’s structural elements themselves.
Symposiums
I organize and convene the Living With+In Infra annual symposium series, bringing together academics, policymakers, urban designers, architects, and community stakeholders to discuss the adaptive reuse and socio-economic potential of infrastructural residual spaces (IRS). The symposium features curated talks on global case studies from cities like Tokyo, London, Zurich, Dhaka, and Paris, exploring themes such as rent structures, community-led design, policy frameworks, and environmental resilience in under-viaduct and railway spaces. Through these interdisciplinary dialogues, the symposium fosters collaborative knowledge exchange and innovative strategies for transforming overlooked infrastructure into inclusive, sustainable urban assets.
